Research

As part of my work as a research assistant at the Institute for Printing Machines and Printing, I work in the Collaborative Research Center 1194: “Interaction between Transport and Wetting Processes” (CRC1194) at the subproject C01 “ Forced Wetting with Hydrodynamic Assist on Gravure Print Cylinders”. The main research focus is on the recording and description of the highly dynamic wetting processes that are present in gravure printing. By means of optical measuring techniques, an attempt is made to capture the processes and flow conditions during the transfer of printing fluids onto the gravure cylinder and from it to the substrate. The difficulty lies in the fact that the relevant processes take place in a spatially extremely small range – from a few micro- to millimeters – but the observation possibilities are severely restricted. The aim is to better understand wetting on structured surfaces in order to shift the boundaries of today's processes, as well as to increase the efficiency of the process and the quality of the finished products. This includes, for example, the realization of a higher maximum printing speed or the identification of influencing factors in the production of printed electronics.
