The Evolution and Stability of Ultra-Thin Wet Films

Theoretical and experimental issues of a stable thin wet film evolution directly after the printing nip are in the scope of this research topic. Each method of transferring fluid to a substrate produces a wet film that, based on the process itself, possesses some intentional self-leveling morphology. In the field of graphical printing screen-like structures of different size and layout are mainly favored. Contrary to this, functional printing of i.e. organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) or organic transistors (OTFTs) requires continuous homogenous layers of sub-100nm thickness to enable good performance. Experiments have shown that reaching this thin layer thickness the film evolution exceeds standard assumptions and methods of predicting the wetting behavior. One observes different types of fast dewetting scenarios absent for thicker films. Hence, different mechanisms have to be part of the thin wet film evolution. Gravitation that i.e. stabilizes a puddle to be flat and homogenous does not play a role for ultra-thin wet films any more. Van-der-Waals forces, concentration gradients of solute and solvent and other effects could cause the observed dewetting phenomena. Further insight of the underlying mechanisms could support the development of new functional fluids and could help to understand the whole complex process of thin film evolution beginning from the fluid transfer up to the dried layer.
