Measurement Equipment

The multispectral camera is used to capture high resolution, high dynamic range, multispectral images. The camera system uses commercial products to the greatest extent and is based on a Sinar 54H studio camera. The 22 mega pixel Kodak KAF 22000CE sensor used within the digital back provides enough resolution to print medium sized images (e.g. 400mm x 500mm, 260ppi). The camera back has micro-positioning capabilities; the sensor is moved four times to position each color of the Bayer patterned CFA over every pixel's spatial location. Therefore, demosaicing is not necessary. Additionally, active direct thermoelectric cooling of the sensor reduces thermal noise and increases the signal-to-noise ratio in dark image areas which is important for HDR scenes. The only modifications of the commercial system is the replacement of the IR-cutoff-filter by a transparent glass filter and use of colorimetrically and spectrally optimized blue and yellow filters in front of the lens. These filters are included in a custom made filter wheel. For vibration-less acquisition the camera is sitting on a studio camera stand (AROBO DSS-OMEGA). The system is adapted from a very similar system developed by the Munsell Color Science Laboratory (RIT) for multispectral art work capturing.

The X-RITE MA98 is a multi-angle spectrophotometer. Color measurements in 19 different geometric configurations of light source and photo detector in the half space above the sample surface are realized. Gonio-chromatic surfaces like printed special effect pigments need to be measured in more than one geometric configuration as provided with the MA98. The angles of illumination and detection affect the optical properties and visual appearance of such materials.

XRite i1iO is an automatic test chart measuring instrument designed for XRite i1. The measurements can be done for all reflection test charts from different materials which thickness does not exceed 10 mm. The measurements are very quick (over 500 measurement fields per minute) and precise.

The crockmeter is used to test the color fastness to rubbing. The textile samples are rubbed with a standard test cloth (dry or wet). The amount of transferred color to the cloth is compared with a grayscale standard and assessed.

The Rubbing device consists of a cylinder (16 ± 0.1 mm) which moves back and forth in straight line along a 104 ± 3 mm with a downward force of 9 ± 0.2 Newton.

The test material may be based on a standard cotton cloth or waterproof abrasive paper with a soft back.

The HP Designjet Z3100 Photo printer has 12 colorants and is used as part of the spectral reproduction system. The printer has a build a build-in spectrophotometer based in X-Rites Eye1 technology. Using the Onyx ProductionHouse RIP (donated by Onyx Graphics) the CMYKRGB ink-set is accessible independently and additional colorants can be used as “spot colors”.

The system is compatible with self written spectral separation software and well tested for the spectral printing application.

The BYK micro-TRI-gloss is a gloss measuring device with three geometric configurations of light source and detector. From one of the standardized angles counted to the perpendicular, light falls on the sample. The glossy to matte surface reflects the incident light more or less specular. For each of the three measuring geometries, the directionally reflected light is detected in gloss direction. The quotient of reflected and incident light is a measure for the gloss of the considered surface.

The X-Rite CI 64 Spectrophotometer from X-Rite is a spherical spectrophotometer. It enables the determination of the color spaces of printed ink layers. The colour tone of the measured field can be determined from the given colour space.

Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test is very easy and highly effective for examination of any individual's color vision. It can diagnose various kinds of red-green and blue-yellow color failing eyesight. The test consists of four trays containing a total of 85 removable color reference caps spanning the visible spectrum. The test must be conducted under D65 light conditions.

This transparency viewer uses two 18 Watt fluorescent lamps to priduce D50 norm light. Due to the possibility of stepless dimming and homogeneous lightning no matter which lightness they are useful for industrial quality control of translucent materials of all kinds.
