Monitoring and control of ink-water balance in offset printing using artificial intelligence – “Magie-KI”.
The IGF research project called “Magie-KI” is being conducted in cooperation between the Chair of Metrology (LMT) at Saarland University and IDD at Darmstadt Technical University. In close cooperation with printing machine manufacturers and operators in the field of offset printing, the problem of controlling the ink-water balance, which has remained unsolved for decades, is being re-evaluated using artificial intelligence.
Based on an automated machine learning method kit developed at LMT, the collected process and measurement data from tests on real offset printing presses will be used to create an intelligent data-driven model. In this context, previously unrecorded measurement and disturbance variables as well as influences of the environment during the printing process are of particular interest. By assessing the quality of the printed sheets in terms of printing defects and color values on behalf of IDD, a correlation is to be established with the corresponding process and measurement data. In the further course of the research project, the developed machine learning model with increasing complexity will be tested and validated in the field.
