The research topic is the evaluation and optimization of large area printing processes (Gravure, flexographic, and screen printing), partly in combination with other coating technologies (Spin coating, vapour deposition), for the purpose of manufacturing printed electronic devices. Examples for such electronic devices are organic field effect transistors (OFET), light emitting diodes (OLED), RFID and sensor tags, and flexible displays. The research is focused on three key topics:
- Mechanical, thermodynamic and hydrodynamic investigation of critical elements of the printing process.
- Interaction of the printing liquid (organic semiconductors, polymers, dispersions) with the printing plate or roller, and the substrate: wetting phenomena, drying.
- Integration of the individual process steps to an overall concept for the manufacturing process
The aim of the research is the development of a process model for functional printing which describes the interrelation of the printing parameters, the properties of the printing inks, substrate pretreatment, and finishing of the printed electronic devices.
