Within the field of “BioMedical Printing Technology”, I am working on hybrid 3D bioprinting systems and processes. Hybrid bioprinting involves the additive manufacturing of biological precursor structures from different material classes. Here, cell-laden hydrogels are combined with scaffold structures made of mechanically more rigid biomaterials, such as thermoplastic, biodegradable polymers. Through subsequent cultivation steps, these can mature into functional biological tissues and be used, for example, as customized muscle or bone implants for regenerative medicine. Suitable material pairings, printing processes and tissue conditioning are being investigated for this purpose.
