SensUs

SensUs – Let’s compete for quality of life!

Whether fitness bracelet, glucose meter or point of care test for the diagnosis of a disease, biosensors have long been an integral part of our society. Especially in the healthcare sector, biosensors offer enormous potential for new treatment options due to their ease of use without the need for costly laboratory equipment and their proximity to the patient. In order to raise awareness of the enormous opportunities offered by biosensor technology, especially in this field, the international, interdisciplinary student competition SensUs, which has been held annually since 2016, was launched.

The aim of the competition is to develop new innovative biosensors for use in healthcare, with a new specific task to be completed each year. For the development, the teams must independently develop or analyse all components of the biosensor. If the results are successfully implemented and presented, various prizes can then be won in the categories “analytical performance of the biosensor”, “creativity of the solution”, “transfer potential to society” or “inspiration of the public”.

During the competition and at the closing SensUs Innovation Days in Eindhoven, a wide variety of stakeholders such as healthcare providers, patients, scientists, students, industry representatives and many more will meet to exchange ideas about biosensors. The competition is organized by students from TU Eindhoven, for students from all over the world.

In addition to these tasks, the interdisciplinary team of the TU Darmstadt has the task of representing the university in the competition and the associated events. In order to realize these tasks in the best possible way, our team is supported by the departments of Biology (Professor Beatrix Süß), Chemistry (Professor Harald Kolmar), Electrical Engineering (Professor Heinz Köppl) and Mechanical Engineering (Professor Andreas Blaeser). The TU Darmstadt team is financially sponsored by our partners, the Center for Synthetic Biology, the Hessen Trade & Invest GmbH Hessen Trade & Invest GmbH as well as the Merck KGaA.
